what is mohr circle why is it used?

Why should mohr circle be known.  Is there any practical application. Why should i

know about stresses at different directions?

Because you may want to know the maximum tensile or shear stress at a point in the structure, given the shear and tensile stresses, so that you can make a proper design decision.

Mohr circle method was originally designed for graphical solutions of plane stress.
