I am trying to use helium to purge air out of a valve body prior to performing cryogenic testing.  How do I determine the amount of helium needed to completely purge all the air out of the valve and at what flow rate?  Do not simply assume that the amount of helium needed is equal to the volume of air displaced.  Please consider mixing of the gases and the differences in densities.  I figure I will need to inject 3 to 4 times the displaced volume to completely purge all the air.

Allow me to ask, can you preceed by drawing a vacuum? This would leave no doubt as to the volume required and better assure a more complete replacement.
