I'm currently working on a large diamter steel pipeline for raw water conveyance in central California. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with testing the welds in the joints of a large steel pipeline. Hydrostatic testing is not an option due to the length of the project and water disposal issues. Some have suggest magnetic testing of a portion of the welds, and visually inspect 100%. FYI, the pipe will be 66" diameter, with bell and spigot joints and fillet welds on the inside only. Very likely the pipe sections will be stabbed together, backfilled, and the welding done on the inside of the buried pipe.
