Has anyone heard of shot peening 6005-T5 extruded aluminum to increase the machinability? There is an operator here that thinks introducing residual stess it will help increase the life of the cutting tools in the CNC lathe. |

Hi,
As I`m aware all 6000 and 7000 series aluminium alloys have excellent machining properties `as is`. In fact the harder the better with aluminium as it heps chip formation during machining. Modern carbide CNC bits are so hard and cheap that I can hardly see the cost effectiveness of shot peening every part before machining just to save a couple of carbide tips a month. As for if it will work at all I`ve never heard of it and it seems a little unlikely to me. Calum |

Have you had any luck contacting the manufacture of the aluminum to ask them? |

They've never heard of doing that so I guess it's not a common practice. I thought that it was a bogus request. I know that some factories shot peen large weldments to counter the effects of welding to produce good parts. |
