I have a large Rineer hydraulic motor coupled to 4 inch drive line -this is a dual output shaft motor-this driveline is a rack and pinion setup. I have just had a shaft break next to one of the pinions-this is a straight line break-I don't have the torque values in front of me right now. Being a craftsman and not an engineer I am seeking the experts advice as to failure analysis. In the 10 years I've been in the rolling mill and around this piece of equipment I have not seen this before. Any input would be appreciated. Maytag |

Can you pls send a picture of the failure and a sketch of the machine where it is located? I'm trying to figure how the stresses is acting on the failed shaft before i make any reco's |

Thanks for all the responses. We are in our fall shutdown and I will be busy until the end of the month. Hopefully after that I'll get a sketch or original drawing and fax it to you. Maytag |

as the fracture is straight line , like it was saw cut , it seem to be a FATIGUE failure , you shall see most of the area like sandblast and a small part brittle or shining. It is the same case of cars's rear axle failure.

We have 8 of these assemblies in operation at all times and a couple of spare shaft, pinion and bearing assemblies. The shafts are rotated out of service to rebuilt with new gear, and bearings. Would the failure prone shafts have defects that could be detected with X-ray or magnaflux so that they could be discarded and not returned to service. Thanks,Maytag |
