Here's a brain exercise for someone:
I am wanting to check the "invisible" lead on a grinding machine. In particular, I want to be sure that there isn't a lead on the seal journal of a shaft. The engineer before me instituted this: He tied a washer on both ends of a string and hung the string on the seal diameter of the journal. He then ran the spindle and watched to see if the string walked up that journal. The problem I have with this methodology is: a) your centers have to be perfectly aligned every time you check this AND b) I believe that centrifugal force will cause that string to walk up the shaft journal. Anyone have any ideas? |
