i'm stuck help:
an aluminum heating coil weighing 300lb. is in a room at 55f Steam at 2psig is turned into the coil. How much heat will be required to heat the coil up to steam temperature. Answer : 11,2815.........But i can not find how to get the answer.. Help please Modified by bigearl at Mon, Mar 21, 2005, 17:04:22 |

Look up the specific heat of alminum, get the temperature of saturated steam at 2psig and use the formula for heat capacity which you can find in any physics or first yesr engineering book. |

i never took up engineering, my work asked me if i would like to atten this 10 week class. I may not ever need it but i would like to do good. i have about 15 questions to answer but for the life of me i can not get the answer for two questions.. i know the formula is W x C x TD = 11,281.5. W is the weight in pounds, c is the specific heat which has the units of BTU per pound per degree F and TD is the temperature rise. Since the temperature of saturated steam at 2psig is about
218 deg F TD=218-55=163 and C of aluminum is about .215, I get 300*0.215*163=10,513BTU which is less than your figure but is probably due to an error in the average C over the temp range. Modified by Administrator at Tue, Mar 22, 2005, 20:39:27 |
