Bending strength of bolt and Torque | |||

If a bolt is torqued properly and there is resulting clamping force that acts axially through the bolt, what effect does the axial force have on the bending strength of the bolt. The bolt in this case clamps down a hook. The hook is then subject to an angled load from a strap. Thus, there is a vertical and horizontal load to the hook which results in shear on the bolt from the vertical, normal stress on the bolt from the horizontal and bending moment stress on the bolt from both the horizontal and vertical force components. Does the axial clamping force on the bolt, which comes from the torque, cancel out some of the bending moment induced by the load on the hook? Thanks in advance |

The axial load applied to the bolt due to torque preload will change (reduce) the deflection due to a bending load. The working strength of the bolt remains unchanged. Your design margin of safety for the bolt should incorporate your anticipated combined loading due to axial and bending loading. |

use either Maximum Shear Stress Theory or Octahedral shear stress theory to solved for the maximum shear stress.Refer to any text on strenght of Materials. |
