I'm building a loft in my shop along an end wall. 8 feet from the
end wall on two supporting posts I'm setting an I-beam spanning 58
feet to support one side of the loft. The other side is supported
by posts on the end wall. I want to box-in the I-beam with 1/4 inch plate. Then I want to weld joist hangers every 16 inches to the plate on one side of the beam to hold 2x10 joists. The anticipated max load on any one joist at the I-beam is 500lbs. What size I-beam do I need factoring in the plates I intend to box-in. How much deflection could I expect with a W12, 12 inch flange, .605 thick flange, .390 thick web 65lbs./ft.? Is the beam twisting too much if I attach the joists in this manner? Any other recommendations?
