How can I reduce the dead time in aluminium extrusion process? Thanks Elif |

Dead time means unwanted time during extrusion process such as the time that the press is not extruding profile, waiting times, etc. |

Sorry Elif, there is no standard solution to this issue. What kind of press is it? (i.e compact press, standard press, movable stem.) Is the puller a bottleneck? (do you hava a single, double or triple puller?) Check these things: 1. If you're using a burpcycle, it's usually enough to release the pressure in the main cylinder and the container to make the press "burp". 2. Make the billet compression with as high pressure as possible. At least 80% of the maximum pressure of the preceeding billet. /Nick |

There are two ways; 1. Have the necessary equipment installed so that there is no time wasted during the production cycle then the system will not only give you the proper heat of the billet but the heat profile all over the billet is as per requirement. It means when the cycle to extrusion starts there is certain temperature of the billet as the extrusion proceeds the temp of the remaining material keeps on increasing. To control this it is necessary to regulate the speed of extrusion such that the temperature of the out coming profile remains constant and that there is no rapture of the profile. For this you get special induction heating furnaces. In such a case the billet feed is not in the form of pre-cut billets but you feed longer logs in the furnace and cut only the required length with hydraulic choppers. 2. The other manual and cheaper way is to have the temperature of the billet furnace a little bit higher. Take out each billet a predetermined time in advance before the end of the extrusion cycle. This all depends on the skill of the operator. It is he who keeps the equipment properly adjusted in accordance with the ambient conditions. I am sure I have been able to explain what I know, however feel free to ask for any further questions.

the time when press is stopping and preparing the new billet for extrusion process. |
