BILLET TEMPERATURE in Aluminum Extrusions | |||

Hello All: I would like to know the appropriate temperature to which the billet needs to be heated. Is it dependent on the temper value of the extrusion ? (like T1, T2, T5, T6 etc). Or is it also dependent on the cross sectional area of the product that is extruded ? We have a billet heater with 3 zones. They are maintained at 3 different temperatures. For a T6 alloy, temperature is maintained at: Zone 1 - 810 F Zone 2 - 860 F Zone 3 - 920 F The combination of the 3 temperature values varies with the die's temper requirement. For a T5 alloy, it could be: Zone 1 - 780 F Zone 2 - 820 F Zone 3 - 900 F But the press operators are not very sure about the exact temperature to be maintained. As a result, different workers in different shifts heat the billet at different temperatures. More information on this would be very helpful. Thanking you, Maharajan |
