Question:
Does every fastener assembly need to use lock washer with fastener (screws)? Can one just use flat washer? Thanks. Green Engineer |

Not every fastener installation requires a locking washer or simular device to prevent the fastener from backing out. For low cyclic loading or non-critical installations, torquing the fastener properly will do the job. Where high cyclic or thermal loading will be present, then a locking device should be included within the design and installation. |

I have become aware of a new screw thread version out. The outer diameter of the male thread is split a few thousands deep and the (I think) edge away from the head has been flared a few degrees. The effect is the thread does not tend to back out with loaded vibrations. ... (I think) ... Anyone have more data on this?? I can't come up with my source and feel as if I hanging out there a bit. The threads you describe are produced by Thredlock Taps from Balax, Inc. I first saw a reference to them in the May 6, 2004 edition of Machine Design . We've been investigating the possible application to our designs. What we found so far is that the resistance to unthreading is very sensitive to the size of the pre-tapped hole. The difference between functional and non-functional can be as little as .003 in. If your drilling process capability can handle this sensitivity, it's a really cool design option.
