Why tools are coated with multiple layers of different materials

Hi Eveyone,
I was wondering why tools are coated in multiple layers of different materials, why not multiple layers of one particular material? If someone could answer my question it would be most aprreciated. Thanks

Some coatings need a sub coat to adhear. Then there is the use of different layers for different properties. Some resist heat fractures, others wear well, some slick and friction free. Some for resistance to corrosive actions.... some for looks. Sometimes just for the sake that a color change shows wear through an important layer or exposeure to corrosive agents. ...the list goes on...
