Strenght of Materials, 4th edition, Pytel, Siger, Chapter 3 states that for a solid shaft (bolts); Max. Shear Stress = (16T)/pie d^3 (T = torque). If that be the case, don't we have to use given allowable shear stress to dictate max torque? In general, shear = 1/2 tensile.
