Dear Kim, If you use plasma nitriding, it will not only improve the surface hardness [and hence increase wear resistance to abrasion, and erosion] but it also increase corrosion resistance and fatigue strength -both mechanical fatigue strength and thermal fatigue strength. All these physical properties are very vital for your gudgeon pin application.
