Hello everyone!
I need to design two supports to hold up a total of about 8000 lbs. of 10" pipe and material. I was thinking of using a length of I-beam and a cradle to support this pipe. I would like to stand the I-beam vertically to the pipe where a cradle would be mounted to hold the pipe. What size I-beam do you think is necessary for this kind of load. I plan on having 2 supports so the load will be distributed to both supports. Thanks for the advice! |

LOTS more information is needed. What is the span distance between supports? Is the pipe stiff enough to support itself over that span? How far off the ground is it? Do you have to consider buckling? Is it an area of fork truck traffic? How serious would it be if it did fall? What side loading will apply and how will you resist it? Actually I suspect that the vertical load carrying capacity is probably your least concern. In theory it doesn't take much steel to hold up 8000 lbs. I really don't intend this to sound mean - but you're asking a forum of folks what size beam they think is necessary to carry that load. Does that mean that when it falls over your defense will be that the forum told you to design it that way? If you are a degreed mechanical engineer you were taught how to calculate all this, right? If not, then I understand why you are asking these questions. |
