The customer Need: there is a general need to reduce the voulme of rubbish in houshold bin. you are required to supply a device to permit a person to crush an aluminium can-drink with little effort, so that they can stored with at least 80% less voulme. Supply a fully tested prototype product before 22/03/2007 ***The product must meet all these requirements: 1)The prototype shall cost no more than £25 2)The crushing force the product exerts on the drink-can shall be at least 200N 3)The input force required to operate the product shall be less than 20N ** Supply the simplest design concept, that meeets all the requiment ... I am stuck as i am direct second year entry , and have not done the relevant courses required for this design.. I have very little knowledge for this design brief ... please recommend websites , ideas and any thing that could help me with this design brief ... If possible send me pictures ... Hi we are doing a similar project. We need to incorporate a solenoid valve and pnuematics as well as electricity into our model. We also have to be able to crush 4 cans at a time. It needs to be operated by the push of the button. We only have until the end of december to make this can crusher. Please leave any tips, designs, etc. Thanks

Just last Saturday I was cleaning out my deceased mother in-laws garden shed, and there was a vintage can crusier on the wall. It was a wall mount channel just big enough for the can (Pepsi, Coca-Cola) to fit in. It had a pin pivot at the top with another channel extending out approximately ten inches with a handle on the end. At about 20 percent (if my memory serves me right) down from the handle pivot pin is another pin and channel. The channel connects to the can crusher piston with another pin. My brother in-law says he crushed many a beer can with it. I don't remember the brand. My five minute drawing is below, you need to run the statics to get loads. Hay Mud, 200N (20kg crushing force) probably insufficient without an impact 20N (2kg hand force) wow not much force for the work output req'd OK 10:1 mechanism achievable Sounds like a lever arm - but dont be fooled If you crush vertically you will need more initial force and a stroke of 100mm - meaning your lever will need have a 1000mm movement or a fancy mechanism Try a screwthread, plenty of force, easy to turn, maybe a nylon one - see what the local hardware some plastic knobs with m10 - m12 a wooden base and clamp plate...might need a second guide post no thread Stick the can on scale and measure the force bricks to crush from 5" to 1" or 2" dia to under 0.5"dia. Check volume of can in a measuring of bowl water for diaplacement full and @80 % reduction in vol ie 375 mls to under 75mls so if u start with half a litre with 80 % can wter will rise to 575mls think of a vise.. check out some vices..and mimic the action.. they supply 2000N plus so no need to be so robust.. size by a dick smithy type with a longer thread Good luck

It seems like you're re-inventing the wheel (or can crusher) Try doing a search for "Can Crusher"...there's a ton of different types. What is special about yours? Marky I'll kindly pay you Tuesday..for a hamburger today....Whimpy

Marky, there may be a ton of them out there but most are rubbish, too light to crush a steel can. I have been mulling over the design of a can crusher for my local pet rescue centre, to crush steel dog food cans. The largest is 4" diam x 7" high ( old money!). They are remarkably strong. It is to be operated by untrained volunteers and must be cheap to produce. I am a blacksmith, not an engineer, and whilst I have had no trouble designing a lever arm mechanism I am struggling with making it safe to use. An arm strong enough to withstand the considerable leverage is quite substancial and heavy - I can just see a few finger tips on the floor! Any advice or even brilliant ideas would be appreciated.

I from the info I have gathered, it appears you are trying to crush the can as it sits upright, or vertically. I just wanted to throw an idea in. The can can be crushed much more readily if you direct the force upon its side, rather than over its top or base. Just food for thought.
