Hi folks,

I am in a bit of a jam and could use some help. We have a prospective customer who is interested in a very large quantity of a product we offer (and already have in stock) if we can retrofit the product with some mounting holes necessary for the customer's application. What we require is a hand-held, hydraulically-operated punch capable of making a 0.406" diameter hole in 0.375" x 2.000" hot-rolled steel bar and allowing for a minimum of cleanup/touchup work on the already finished part. Due to the construction of the product, a traditional iron worker or metal muncher is not an option. Any and all suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Ron

You want to punch a hole (.406 diameter) in hot-rolled steel bar that is .375 to 2 diameter and have minimal clean up?

Is this even is possible? Have you considered drilling or water-abrasive jet cutting?

Kelly,

I think maybe you misunderstood. The material is 3/8" x 2" bar stock and the holes are to be 0.406" diameter. Due to the configuration of the weldment of which the bar stock is included, inserting the entire part into an abrasive water jet machine is prohibited. Drilling is an option, but will be painfully slow. I have left a magnetic base drill as our last resort. I would prefer to use a hand-held hydraulic punch for the purpose of minimizing time. We will have 3280 holes to create.

Thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully, someone has had a similar experience and can give me some helpful hints.

Ron

A hand held punch will not work. Drilling takes too long...you'll need to pre-drill. The part needs to go into a machine for these holes to go in.

I recommend EDM or laser.

yes, there are hand punch units on the market that will do these. Two major companies provide the punch frames, punches and die buttons. However you still need something to press the punch. The best way is an old punch press from a used machine dealer. You will have to then provide some kind of safety device to prevent any possible way of getting any body part in the danger zone during punching.

Another way is to contact a local metal punching company and have them do the process... this way will most likely be less expensive and far quicker than you think. They will know where to get the above mentioned punch frame units.. or may have something in stock.

Also, a steel working plant in your area may have an "iron worker" that will do the job.... if the shape will fit into the jaws. "Iron workers" are used to punch that kind of hole with various sized punches and buttons in construction members.

Good news, I found a company in Minnesota who can provide not only the hand held punch (for lack of a better description, it looks like an oversized hydraulically applied micrometer). Marky, I appreciate the insight on pre-drilling the parts prior to welding, but the whole point of this was to put holes in existing weldments and sell them rather than build new ones from scratch. Basically, we had a bunch of old stock laying around collecting dust and a customer wanted to buy it if we could retrofit it with these holes. Due to the way it was constructed, it was impossible to put them into an iron worker (that was my first idea) so I thought I would ask for suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Ron

Great news, thanx for sharing the good news.
Yeah, that is a punch "C" frame. I didn't think many of those were still out there. I've used that method. It is a stronger version of what I was posting about putting into a punch press. The smaller ones can't be used that way or you would spread the "C" frame and loose alignment.
