Hello, I am working on designing a locking mechanism. Please refer to the drawing attached as you read further. The plate is free to translate only along the y axis. The W beams and angle iron are fixed structures and the plate slides on the top of the W beams and in between the grooves of the angle iron. This setup is deployed subsea (around 5000ft below sealevel) where the motion of the plate is controlled by a robot. The plate is designed to move plus or minus 5 inches along the y axis. Once the plate is moved to the required distance, the plate has to be locked down with the W beams or the angle irons so that no further motion is possible. For practical purposes, the least count of motion may be assumed to be plus or minus 0.1 inches. I'd really appreciate if you can suggest a simple solution to this problem. Thanks in advance.

You might try to mount a serrated plate (like a gear rack) longitudinally in the y direction and have a mating pad engage with an over toggle lock. The pitch of the serrations could be .1 inches and the width and number of engaged teeth could be designed to accomodate some high loads. Sounds like a fun one.

Thanks for your reply.
For certain reasons, pegs and holes may be the only allowable solution in this situation. The holes have to be atleast 1.5 inch in diameter. For 10 inches of total movement of the plate, and with a least count 0.1 inches we would need drill a lot of holes which may not be practical. Is there a way around this problem? In other words, is it possible to drill holes in some kind of pattern such that for any movement of the plate in steps of 0.1 inches, two holes line up? thanks |
