That is far to complex a project to explain in a forum answer. The first thing to know is the stroke, torque to handle, RPM to handle, distance between the cylinders, how many cylinders, rod journal size, main journal size, types of thrust bearings, how many thrust bearings, location of thrust bearings, type of journals, type of power end connection, size and shape of power end conection, type of secondary end connection, size and shape of secondary end connection, type of oil flow passages, location of oil flow passages, oil viscosity, volume of oil required, available oil pressure, available oil volume, left or right rotation, type counter weights, space available for counter weight swing, lenght of crank case, location of main journals in crank case... and many more variables. I think you were ask a trick question... They most likely wanted to hear you discuss such variables in a, think on your feet, well thought out method. Hearing a job candidate work out just some of these items would clearly map out that candidate's engineering and thought process skills. How did you do??? An excellent question for an interview... I wish I had thought of it. ... ... .. . . . . I have now! The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
