hello, i had a question about the magnetic properties of different steels. i know the carbon steels are considered magnetic and the stainless steels are not so there must be some sort of scale that progresses from 'most magnetic' to 'least magnetic'. specifically, i was wondering if A286 stainless steel is considered more or less magnetic than the 300 series stainless steels. |

I've not heard about A286 before. Perhaps, you would like to share more about this product with readers out here. However, most of the 3xx series are of non-magnetic properties. They are mainly for commercial usage. For instance 304 and 316. They are those that are prefered by industrial users. Mainly for chemical equipment and general fabrication etc. 304 would be of lesser corrosion resistance rather than as compared with 316. Normally, suppliers would classify 316 as marine grade since they are of higher corrosion resistance. If you are looking for stainless steel of good magnetic properties, 4xx series is recommended. |

303 is magnetic, machines ok if the tools are sharp, and work hardens quickly. A dull tool will work harden it beyond the ability to cut it with that tool. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. A286 is what's called heat-resistant. it is also corrosion resistant but it has much greater strength properties than 300 series stainless. it's the material of choice for our fasteners. |
