Is there a recognized (a Standard) specification for a matte finish on stainless steel? Requiring a supplier to place a matte finish on a product is very vague and subjective. The incoming inspectors have no real guideline. I'd like to be able to call out a spec to give the supplier a target and then make an inspection tool for the inspectors to use for comparison. Paint Grip finish for sheets, bead or sand blasted for solids. Is it die cast, forged, or machined? Most of the time for stainless to have a shine it has been polished... don't have it polished after any machine working. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. Hi guys. Errmm..I don't think there is a fixed designation for matte finish stainless steel rolled products. Well, I might not be totally correct. But, the common tradenames of stainless steel in the market would be 202, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 430....etc. Normally with prefix AISI or SUS in front of the tradenames depending on each specific country's industrial standards. Common surface finish would be number 1, 2B, BA, 4, 8 etc. Number 8 is near to mirror-like surface with a high reflectivity followed by BA. Cost of purchasing stainless steel products is more or less dependant on the type of surface finish and also the amount of nickel content in the parent material iteself. Some of my points might not be fully elaborated or maybe incorrect. Anyway, I welcome replies on points that I'm incorrect. To me, its learning another new thing. |

The SS would be 17-4. Nevertheless, I guess I would think the material would be a moog point. If the finish specification is a 'matte' or 'satin' finish it should apply to any type of material, right? Maybe I'm over simplifying too much. I figured there would be some kind of Mil spec. Where can I get more specifics on the 1, 2B, etc finishes mentioned above? Thanks |
