I want to set up a power steering system on an older tractor that I have. The following is what I have so far.
I have a closed center center valve and the cylinder that it will drive (extend/retract). I can use the hydraulic reservoir on the tractor. The one thing I need to get is a pump. The pump will be run off the engine fly wheel similar to an alternator.
My question is what type of pump do I need to operate the closed center valve. The type of pump I planned on using would be a constant flow pump. Wouldn't a constant flow pump cause a large pressure buildup within the system because the valve would not allow oil to flow through?

I assume you want to spend as little as you can, not necessarily for lack of funds but as a matter of the pride of accomlishment... I'm that way too. Lack of funds does figure in on projects though in my case, often.

Go to a wrecking yard and get thepower steering pump from a late model car. While there get the steering control from the end of the steering wheel of an older car that has a cylinder parallel to the steering link bar between the wheels. Nearly all steering systems use the same "RAG" joint between the steering shaft and the control valve. I'm betting yours will interconnest to the control valve. Then get the cylinder, too. Tie this cylinder off to a welded trunion and the other end to the steering link bar and you have it.

Speaking of which.. I need to do just that to my 1977 Land Cruiser..!!!

Good luck....!!!

Didn't Char-Lynn make a system for that?

I believe that Eaton Corporation bought them out years ago...

check out www.eaton.com and you SHOULD be able to find something there.
