Hi! I'd like to make a simulation/model of a sub-sea operation using a ROV (Remotely operated vehicle). The simulation will take place in a swimming pool using a scaled ROV model controlled from the surface. Placing positioning sensors on several objects scattered around on the bottom I'd like to monitor the absolute position of the ROV. I'm totally new to sub-sea operations and sensors used in this environmet. Some inputs on what kind of sensors that might work for this project and what kind of precision to expect would be great. |

Well, a multi-diretional depth sounder sensor(s) could be helpfull. You could use off-the-shelf technology to sense where the walls and obstacle are. |

This technology is called "short base line" positioning. It is an accoustic triangulation technique. Some companies to look at are Kongsberg, and RDI. If you want to design a system from scratch, you can purchase "pingers" and recievers. This integration is rather complicated for accurate positioning, but if you are interested in the software side, it can ceretainly be done. You may have problems even with professionaly designed systems because of the extremely small size of a pool, and the reflective qualities of the walls, though. The end result depends on how deep you want to get into this technology. |
