Hand component placement on PWA's Question

Any ideas on how to ensure that components are placed in the right locations on the PWA during hand add-on and soldering operations? I am looking for somthing the add-on operator can use themselves to verify their own work. We are using both through hole and SMT components.

I have seen images and part numbers illustrated on the pwb board. Additionally, I have seen a post assembly check using a detailed picture of a correct board.

I have often wondered about the value of a semi-transparent printed 1-1 scale photo of a correctly installment, set up in such a way that a populated board could be placed under it. Any misplaced or missing components might would show up clearly. But more to the magic, the eye of the checker would quickly become trained to spot all the likely mistake areas without the photo, because of the repeated process.

What 'ya think?

Of course for money there are computerized visual systems that compare the digital camera image of the board to a programed pattern.
