A 1200 mm Diameter Pole, 6 mm thickness is has a 415 x 415 mm square cut-out. I want to calculate second moment of area along the slotted area for bending strength evaluations.
Kindly suggest any method I can use.

Clement

Well, if you have a Mechanics of Materials or Statics book around it will be detailed appropriately.

Draw the geometry cross section out and divide the geometry into section. The second moment for a circle is Ix = Iy =(1/4)*pie*r^4 and the moment for a rectangle is (1/12)BH^3

Sum or substract as required.
