How low is it's corrosion resistance. Is it worse than that of carbon steel? |

I would have to say no - 2024 is commonly used for aircraft sheet metal. In identical environments, carbon steel will rust away. 2024 is actualy a clad material normally composed of a aluminum alloy in the center and a more pure aluminum at the outside layers. Pure aluminum (or any metal) tends to oxidize less. Additionaly, when aluminum oxidizes, it will form a chalky residue on the outer surfaces which helps to protect the base material from further environmental oxidation. |
