Hello there
Ive been looking into crane design, and more particularly mobile tower cranes. Having understood how the telescopic boom mounted cranes operated i have been unable to find any information on how the tower crane retracts to fold back up on the back of a lorry without the telescopic boom. Any information to shed some light on the issue would be much appreciated as would and recommended literature.

The answer is: it doesn't retract. Large tower (I assume you're talking about "lattice boom" and "lattice tower") cranes are assembled on site and then disassembled after the job is over. The pieces of boom are hauled by lorry to the next site or back to the crane operator's base. The main body of the crane is either driven (if self-propelled) or loaded up and hauled to follow its boom pieces. It usually requires a small crane to help assemble and disassemble the large one, although some cranes can actually put themselves together and take themselves apart - it's neat to see it in action, although it takes a while.
