Hello,
I'd just like to know what efficiencies one can expect from commercially available air compressors (2 stage reciprocating or rotary vane) rated at about 7.5 HP and air motors (rotary vane) rated at 5 HP. I've had no experience working with such equipment, however i'm likely to encounter them a lot soon.. Thanks! |

To run air motors... something I do a lot of too...
You are interested in the number of CFM.. {cubit feet per minute}/ vs money spent/ cost to run/ maintain/ years of service. A screw compressor will provide the best performance for air motors in most cases.. they have ability to vary output and keep up with a variation in CFM requirements while maintianing a fairly constant PSI if sized correctly. To run an air motor a high percentage of the time you need to know the CFM the motor/ motors draw and be sure your compressor can handle that output for the duty cycle you will be running it. ALSO... be sure the compressor can get enough air flow around it to cool properly.. If you size the compressor too small you will be waiting for recovery and loose production time. I recommend that you purchase an active dryer to be installed in the line. When drawing large volumes of compressed air you will have a serious problem with moisture at the air motors/ die grinders. An compressed air in line dryer (which is basically a small airconditioner) will remove the moisture before it can accumulate in the lines... several problems solved! -randykimball- The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. Thanks for that quick primer on air motors. What i really need at the moment is the power-input/power-output if i were to run an air motor and a compressor, hypothetically, in series (say i run the motor at 1 HP output); how much more power must i put into the compressor for a certain power output from the air motor (say 1.7 HP into the compressor for 1 HP out of the air motor?). It is my thought that air motors are rated in PSI and CFM's. Air compressors are rated at PSI, CMF's and duty cycles. What horse power motor they are powered by is a different thing. You need a compressor that will deliver the CMF's for the duty cycle your air motor/s require/s. Your air compressor supplier will be able to answer the question from there. If you know the horse power of the air motor then your supplier must know at what PSI and CFM that power is accomplished. -randykimball-

Hi i am a undergraduate... i am facing a big problem now as i need to design a self-started air motor. I do not know any detail info on the working principle of the air motor and how it works.. so i wish i could get some help as well as some websites or other info showing me how it works |
