I need to block the end of an aluminum tube (OD 20mm / ID 8mm). The tube is used in a fuel injection system, and so contains automotive gasoline. I am thinking of using a 1/8-27 PTF SAE Short plug, and tapping the end of the tube with an NPSI thread to match. (0.3429 minor dia). Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I am likely to see any sealing problems, when the fuel is at about 4 bar ? Also, the only plugs I have available are zinc plated steel, which could cause me a galvanic corrosion issue - has any one got experience of the effect other plating materials have on seal performance ? according to sae J476a...you have to control the diameter of both the female and male...the female should be at the min and the male should be at the max....if this is a one time fix for a single project, you may have to use a sealant...i would not use something like that in production especially on hydraulics...hope this helps... |

Linked to your question, i'm having some issues of my own. Could you please advise on the metric or standard imperial equivalent of a 1/2" NPSI thread. Is there a standard conversion i can use? Thanks |

Well, I'd sure like to suggest a polyurethane plug. It will seal and not have a problem with the fuel to my knowledge. Poly can be cut with a thread die and will compress and conform to the inside shape of the REAL size of your hole. I failed to mention that poly comes in different durometers. This is somewhat like hardnesses.
