I am not familiar with using CO2 for protective gas... although it appears to be useful for plain steels with limited carbon content (My applications are all aerospace).
Recommend You refer to AMS-STD-2219 "FUSION WELDING for AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS". This spec list "standard specifications for numerous gases, including CO2.
Per AMS-STD-2219 BB-C-101 and CGA G6.2 are the prime and alternate standards for CO2... and these specs should list impurity limits.
