Hydraulic Cylinder Piston Velocity Equation
Fluid Flow ContentsHydraulic & Pneumatics
The speed at which the piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder moves is based on the following equation:
Ve = 231 Q/Ap
Where:
Ve = Extension rate of piston rod
231 = Constant (cubic inches in a gallon)
Q = Flowrate of the pressurized fluid (gpm)
Ap = Area of the piston (in2)
Area of piston equation
Ap = pi Dp2 / 4
Where:
Ap = Piston area
pi = 3.14157
Dp = Diameter of piston
4 = Numercal constant
