The basic shifting equation is determining the difference between the Kn diameter (where the 1/4n length exists) and the desired diameter of the stress calculation; so Kn must always be the reference diameter to which you are adjusting the [1/4n+2*tan(30deg)*(Esmin-Knmax)] shift. Put another way 1/4n is permanently linked to Kn so that diameter must always be the reference diameter to which any adjustments are made to get a new thread length.

Thank you JAlberts, I finally got it. I wasn't using the width of the thread form at the pitch diameter (the 1/2n term) as the starting wdth and I was using the wrong equation for the internal (nut) threads. I have equations for Buttress threads now!
