A question has been asked about the use of hollow bolts. They were mentioned in school (about 50 years ago). I think they were used as head bolts for increased streach and fatigue strength but I have not been able to find current engineering information or reference. Any help of suggestions?

A hollow bolt to increase strain and fatigue strength? Bolts with increased fatigue capabilities are generally those with better base material characteristics - such as grade 8 bolts.
You might be thinking of a Head Stud vs. a Head Bolt... Head studs normally have an internal wrenching feature (looks hollow) to allow installation and holding of the stud during installation. Instead of turning the entire threaded area of the bolt to obtain the desired torque and tension only the nut is turned allowing for greater accuracy torque application. By applying higher accuracy torque the fatigue characteristics of the bolt stud installation is improved.
Moreover studs are available with reduced body diameter areas.. These areas allow for increased bending loading and strain..
